Our achievements and accomplishment so far…..

Year 2005

  1. Doctor’s weekly visit: This was the time when Diva village had no medical practitioner who had an authentic college degree that is essential for the doctor to practice and treat patients. Our school co- ordinated with the authorities at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital – which is a very famous municipal hospital in Mumbai for their assistance. We requested an upcoming doctor to visit the school premises each Sunday with a medical kit and stock of basic medicines. The doctor’s visit prompted the local inhabitants to come out with their ailments and get medically diagnosed and treated by the doctor. This was a real social service that made the neighboring people to accept our presence in the right perspective.
  1. Music training: We identified a music teacher who visited our school once each week and taught the interested students in the skill of harmonium and tabla. These extra-curricular activities endeared the musically inclined students/families towards us.
  2. Yoga Classes /Exercise: We started yoga class – taught by a trained yoga teacher- in the year 2005. This exercise for 20-25 minutes each day after daily prayers has benefited the students as well as the teachers immensely. Care for their inner and outer health takes place, apart from training on tolerance, practical thinking and sharpness of mind. The        practice of daily Yoga Class continues till date.

Year 2006

Overnight camp for students with the supervision of the teachers was organized in the year 2006. Apart from fun of enjoying their first camp-fire and collective cooking for dinner, the students got trained in team-spirit and socializing as a group. The feedback we received was very positive and encouraging.

Year 2007

Adults in the locality whose children studied in the school approached us with a strange request. They wished to acquire skills in some art that can be used to start their own small scale unit commercially. Their intention was only to obtain enough daily wages to make do the expenses of the family. We pondered and organized workshops through which the illiterate adults learned the art of candle-making, phenyl making, handicraft with plastics etc. The response was very good and some of the teachers and all the neighboring adults who attended these workshops got enthused in using the knowledge in enhancing their daily income.

Year 2008

Some of the staff who was teaching the kids of our school was not officially ‘trained’ but their interest in teaching was contagious. Through Nav Nirmiti, an NGO in Powai, we organized a workshop on learning skills in Maths and also received a teaching kit from them. The teachers were benefited by this very much and commenced their instructions to students in the ‘trained’ way.

Year 2009

  1. Adult-education classes: The illiterate adults in the locality were approached by our school staff to enroll for adult-education classes. The response was very good and the school teachers began their task in earnest. The result of this is that the parents who could not even sign their own name and were using ‘fingerprint’ signatures, got to learn to write and sign their own names. We taught them to sign their names in documents like progress reports, teachers notes etc.
  1. International Women’s Day: Each year on March 08, the IWD, we have a get-together with programs and games. We invite a lady chief guest and have mothers of the students and ladies from the neighbourhood as participants apart from girl students. Topics that encourage any female to utilize her potential to the maximum and have self-esteem enhanced are discussed. We also advise the audience to encourage their daughters with good education and learn other skills to become confident ladies in the long run.
